Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research Award

Fulbright Commision

Overview

The study/research award category includes projects in both academic and arts fields. The study/research grants are available in approximately 140 countries. Applicants for these grants design their own projects and will typically work with advisors at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. Alternatively, where so specified, they may apply to a taught Master's degree program at a university. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicant’s first step is to familiarize himself with the program summary for the host country. Creative and performing arts applicants are required to submit supplementary materials based on their disciplines.

An applicant must secure in advance a letter of affiliation from a university, organization or individual who has agreed to work with the student. Those who agree to provide an affiliation letter are not expected to provide financial support; rather, they may offer access to university facilities, research lab space and equipment, or supervision and support of the student in his work. The letter should clearly state a willingness to support the proposed project or period of study and should speak to the validity and feasibility of the proposal.

Deadline Information

Early October (with campus deadline in Mid-September)

Eligibility Requirements

* Graduating seniors and alumni who have not completed a Ph.D. are eligible.

* There is no specified minimum GPA, but applicants need to be able to demonstrate adequate academic qualifications for the proposed research project or program of study.

* Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Non-U.S. citizens may apply through their own embassies.

*Candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months, not counting undergraduate study abroad are preferred. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section.

*For most programs, applicants who have had extensive previous foreign experience in the host country are at a competitive disadvantage, but are still eligible to apply.
